AN APPRECIATION OF ALAN [ARNIE]SCOTT[1948 -2023]

BY FELLOW
GEORDIE ALAN DICKIE

Alan, who was a Geordie and went to my old school Rutherford Grammar, first appeared at EK Cricket Club in the early eighties.
He like me, was from Newcastle and supported Newcastle United. Alan was a capable amateur footballer.
He studied at Sheffield University graduating with a PhD in Chemistry. He put this qualification to good use at The National Engineering Labs, East Kilbride[NEL] where he worked for many years.
He loved cricket and one day turned up at EKCC and the rest is history.
He was an able and competent cricketer , who liked to keep wicket as well as batting.
On occasion, when his guiles as a slow bowler were needed, to remove a dogged batsman, he would bowl donkey drops off 24 yards and these normally did the trick in dismissing the surprised batter.
Alan was calm under pressure and was knowledgeable about cricket and in other subjects.
He was also a good communicator and these qualities made him a good team leader.
He successfully captained many EKCC teams. He was good at passing his cricketing skills onto younger members at the club.
He led by example, keeping himself fit ,by running ,walking and cycling and
Practising at the nets on Thursdays over a number of years before having a beer with other club members. He was a successful Club Treasurer for many years up to his recent death.
He was a talented bridge player and put his skills in this field to good use by representing NEL over many years in league bridge. He played in a very successful NEL team.
Another area in which he and his long term partner Marjorie enjoyed, was participating in general knowledge and sporting quizzes.
As a team they had amassed a great knowledge and they were successful in many quizzes.
Alan was a private person but was enthusiastic and positive in all that he did, and he had a great enjoyment of life especially on the cricket tours on which he went.
In his later years Alan and Marjorie loved going on cruises and went on several.
In addition to cruising Alan and Marjorie spent many happy days in his beloved Northumberland at the seaside town of Amble where they had a
static home.

He was a great guy and as the song says ‘WHERIVVOR YE GANYE’RE SURE TE FIND A GEORDIE’
