EK progress the the SCU trophy quarter finals

Saturday saw East Kilbride host West Lothian in the final Scottish Cup group stage game. East Kilbride knew they had to win to keep pressure on Clydesdale as they took on SMRH at Titwood. If EK won and Clydesdale lost EK would be through to the Scottish Cup quarter finals.

Captain Harmanjit Singh won the toss and given EK's recent form with the bat decided to bat first and set a total for West Lothian to chase. Openers Gary Kleinveldt and Craig Smith started in their usual positive fashion. Craig was dismissed early LBW with the second LBW shout in successive deliveries. Stewart Kampman joined Gary at the crease and put on a brisk 50 partnership until the prolific Gary was caught hitting straight down the ground but being caught well by the West Lothian captain Andy Raven. Stewart was given a life early on skying an attempted pull which was dropped by the West Lothian wicketkeeper. Peter Bocock was the man at the wicket with Stewart and as they rebuilt well Peter was dismissed caught down the leg side when it appeared he had instead hit the ground rather than the ball. Skipper Harmanjit Singh joined Stewart at the crease and looked fluent striking the ball cleanly for a better than a run a ball 24. He was unfortunately ran out backing up with the bowler deflecting the ball onto the stumps with Singh short of his ground. This meant Aftab Talpur joined Stewart who would be one of Stewarts 7 partners in the innings. He only lasted two balls running down the pitch to be stumped by the West Lothian keeper. This meant that Umair Saeed joined Stewart and he instantly found his stride. He stuck the ball cleanly from the start and constructed a well paced innings of 79 from 67 deliveries including 3 6's. Stewart was continuing to pace his innings and eventually was dismissed for a well deserved 90 from 128 deliveries. He was the second EK batsmen to be ran out backing up in the innings. Joshua Johnston managed to strike a 6 before falling going for one to many. Gavin Meikle fell to a wicked slower delivery which completely deceived him to be dismissed LBW. This left Tom Richards and Shahid Mahmood to face the last over. Tom managed to hit his first delivery for 6, then exchanged singles with Shah and then Tom hit his second six of the over to allow EK to post a daunting 296.

West Lothian came out all guns blazing trying to chase the huge total but Stewart had too much for their top 3 taking 3 wickets for only 9 runs. Umair joined in the action with 2 wickets along with Aftab who claimed a wicket thanks to a sharp catch from Skipper Singh. The only resistance EK met was the West Lothian overseas amatuer Denby who looked a good batmen before he fell to Joshua Johnston for the first of his 2 wickets. Shahid Mahmood picked up the final 2 wickets thanks to a smart catch from Gavin Meikle in the deep.

A comprehensive win but it wasn't enough as Clydesdale comfortably beat SMRH which means EK go into the Quarter finals of the SCU trophy where they will play Heriots. This saturday EK face Greenock away with the 2nd x1 playing the reverse fixture at home,
